The Causal Role of Astrocytes in Slow-Wave Rhythmogenesis: A Computational Modelling Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Finding the origin of slow and infra-slow oscillations could reveal or explain brain mechanisms in health and disease. Here, we present a biophysically constrained computational model of a neural network where the inclusion of astrocytes introduced slow and infra-slow-oscillations, through two distinct mechanisms. Specifically, we show how astrocytes can modulate the fast network activity through their slow inter-cellular calcium wave speed and amplitude and possibly cause the oscillatory imbalances observed in diseases commonly known for such abnormalities, namely Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, depression and ischemic stroke. This work aims to increase our knowledge on how astrocytes and neurons synergize to affect brain function and dysfunction.

Wave Motion and Stop-Bands in Pipes with Helical Characteristics Using Wave Finite Element Analysis
Pipes are widely used in many industrial and mechanical applications and devices. Although there are many different constructions according to the specific application and device, these can show helical pattern, such as spiral pipes, wire-reinforced pipes/shells, spring-suspension, and so on. Theoretical modelling of wave propagation provides a prediction about the dynamic behavior, and it is f...
متن کاملIntegrated brain circuits: neuron-astrocyte interaction in sleep-related rhythmogenesis.
Although astrocytes are increasingly recognized as important modulators of neuronal excitability and information transfer at the synapse, whether these cells regulate neuronal network activity has only recently started to be investigated. In this article, we highlight the role of astrocytes in the modulation of circuit function with particular focus on sleep-related rhythmogenesis. We discuss r...

The present article is devoted to a theoretical study on Love wave vibration in a pre-stressed fluid-saturated anisotropic porous viscoelastic medium embedded over an inhomogeneous isotropic half-space influenced by gravity. The expression of dispersion has been achieved with the help of mathematical tools such as variable separable method and Whittaker’s function’s expansion under certain boun...
متن کاملHydrodynamic Modelling of Coral Reefs:Ningaloo Reef-Western Australia
As with all coral reef systems, the ecology of Ningaloo Reef is closely linked to water circulation which transport and disperse key material such as nutrients and larvae. Circulation on coral reefs may be driven by a number of forcing mechanisms including waves, tides, wind, and buoyancy effects. Surface waves interacting with reefs have long been known to dominate the currents on many coral r...
متن کاملThe Role of Wnt Signaling Pathway on the Expression of TGFβ 1 and TGFβ 2 in Cultured Rat Cortical Astrocytes
Introduction: Astrocytes, the most abundant glia in the central nervous system, modulate neuronal survival and function. Astrocytic functions are mediated by synthesis and secretion of wide ranges of polypeptides through mechanism (s) poorly understood. Among these, TGFβs are synthesized and released by the astrocytes. In this study, the involvement of Wnt signaling pathway on the synthesi...
